Nokia is planning to introduce a rather remarkable new search service called Point and Find which allows mobile users to bring up real-time information of an object they are looking at.
According to the Nokia Conversations-blog, Point & Find is currently still in closed beta. However, sources at Noknok.tv say this new service will be introduced within several months in the USA and UK.
The main idea behind the service is rather straightforward: use the camera on your mobile phone to pick the object you want to know more about. The camera recognizes the object and, combined with GPS data, searches the Internet to provide you with information. Current phone models (like the N95) are said to be compatible with the service without needing any hardware upgrades.
Now, for launch, it looks like movies will be centre stage, so ‘Point and Find’ should most likely be called something else, such as ‘Point and Find out more about this movie, such as viewing a trailer, reading reviews or buying cinema tickets’.
So, when will we actually see this? “Soon” screamed the nice man demoing the service using a poster for Madagascar 2 and getting us all excited. Madagascar 2 comes out in November. Is that a clue?
